How to Messy.Updo

Updated: Nov 22, 2018

Messy.Updo is your go-to, chic, Pinterest worthy up style for your brunch date or wedding day! This style is best done using KEVIN.MURPHY Sewing.Kits. What did you say? Sewing kits? Yes, you read right. Don't worry the needle is plastic and is so much more comfortable than a million and two bobby pins in your updo.

Products Needed by KEVIN.MUPRHYANTI.GRAVITY hair spray

YOUNG.AGAIN oil

DOO.OVER dry powder finishing spray

Tools Needed

KM Texture Comb (or a wide tooth comb)

Curling Iron or Wand

KM Sewing Kit

KM Detailing.Brush (or teasing brush)

Step by Step

On dry hair, prep with ANTI.GRAVITY hairspray through out the hair, and comb threw. This spray protects the hair from heat damage as well as give volume. For my client in the video I paired her look with YOUNG.AGAIN oil, to help with hair integrity and DOO.OVER, to give volume and texture.

Curl hair in sections by flat wrapping the hair around the iron and curling away from the face. Once all the curls have cooled, spray DOO.OVER, and use your wide tooth comb to undo the Shirley Temple locks you just created, too voluminous undone texture.

After curling, use your KEVIN.MURPHY Detailing.Brush to give some extra height in the crown. Back comb in a c motion against the hair to create a pillow effect for the hair to rest on top.

Split the hair at the ear on both side. The hair on top is combined with the crown and back section.

SEWING TIME!

3 different color threads are provided. Choose which thread is best suited for your clients hair color then cut the thread from the length of your hand to your heart.

Insert the thread threw the eye of the needle and create a knot, or twist the thread to hold in place. The thread has a waxy finish which gives the thread traction holding the style in place.

Clip the back section up and out of the way for the moment. Now, what you'll create is the anchor for the updo. Insert the needle threw the hair at the base of her neck leaving a tail end of the thread out where you started. Loop the thread around 3 times. After 3 you should be able to tug and feel it firmly in place.

Unclip the back section and hold needle to the side. Gather the back section of hair (having a slight twist motion helps) and sew into place in a zig zag motion; push the needle threw the bun and the base, repeat going back and forth till secure (but not to crazy or you'll run out of thread!)

Intertwining the sides

Take one side, slightly twist, and sew it into the opposite side of the bun. Then the same to the other side, leaving the ends out for the moment.

It doesn't have to be perfect!

It's look is meant to be effortless and lived in. When creating this look, I like to leave some pieces of hair down from the bun area to make it more of a undone and soft. .

Locking the sewing in place

Once you've sewn everything in place, make a loop and tie you needle threw it. Using your craft shears cut the thread ( & be careful not to cut the hair).

TIP:

For pieces of hair you wished you could have tied up more. You can bend the piece of hair to make a small loop and fit it into the eye the the needle. Now you can treat the lock of hair like the thread and weave it through out the style.

Finish the look with a mist of DOO.OVER or SESSION.SPRAY and TA DA, she's perfect!
